Impacted wisdom teeth need to be professionally removed

Are you suffering pain or discomfort from a wisdom tooth? This can often be a sign that it's impacted and needs to be removed. Taree Dental Care offers specialised wisdom teeth removal services. For many people, wisdom teeth often grow into position with minimal pain, but if there isn't enough space for these to grow, or if your wisdom teeth emerge on an angle, this generally leads to the teeth becoming impacted.

The symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth

If you are uncertain whether or not you have an impacted wisdom tooth, these are some of the common symptoms you might be experiencing:

• Soreness in your mouth (that can travel from the ear and throat)
• Sharp pains or throbbing
• Jaw stiffness
• Swelling in the back of the mouth, gums or face
• Feeling unwell

It's important to have your wisdom teeth removed if you are feeling a lot of pain or discomfort as impacted teeth can leave you susceptible to a build up of plaque and bacteria and can also result in cysts, infection, gum disease and tumours developing.

What are the standard procedures used for wisdom teeth removal

Depending on how deeply your wisdom teeth are impacted will determine whether these are removed at a dental clinic or in hospital. If your teeth are not badly impacted, the dental practitioner will use local anaesthetic to numb the area, before removing your teeth with forceps. For more severely impacted teeth, it is necessary to have these removed in hospital under general anaesthetic, as further incisions may need to be made and sometimes some bone has to be removed before the tooth or teeth can be pulled.

If you are experiencing impacted wisdom teeth, make an urgent appointment with our friendly team at Taree Dental Care today.
